    Prevention is better than cure

Why Grain Store Fumigation is important

An infestation can be extremely hard to detect in the early stages but just a single insect per kilogram of wheat can mean that a lorry load of grain stills introduce tens of thousands of pests into a storage facility. Common pests such as the Grain weevil can lay up to 200 eggs and in a matter of weeks severely damage the value of your commodity, which is why early and effective fumigation and grain weevil treatment is essential.

Just some of the reasons why Grain Store Fumigation is important include:

    • Cost efficient prevention of potential downgrading, loss of commodity, and rejection
    • Effectively prevents contamination from frass, webbing, insect remains, and shed skins which will damage grain quality and value
    • Also prevents damage from heating and moisture hotspots that encourage the growth of harmful storage fungi

Globally pests account for an estimated 5–10% loss of stored agricultural products and costs the industry millions. By acting quickly you can protect your grain from infestation and preserve the value of your harvest.

Proven solutions for grain weevil treatment

Fast and effective Grain Weevil Treatment

Grain weevils are one of the most common and destructive pests found in the UK in stored commodities such as wheat, barley, oats, and rice. Once inside, they bore into individual kernels to feed and lay eggs, making them difficult to detect in the early stages. If left untreated, a small infestation can spread quickly and ruin an entire bulk store, leading to rejection, contamination, and significant financial loss.

The most effective grain weevil treatment is phosphine grain store fumigation. Unlike surface sprays or contact insecticides, fumigation penetrates deep into the grain and destroys all life stages of the pest from adults and larvae to eggs hidden inside kernels ensuring a complete eradication and prevents re-infestation.

We provide safe and certified grain weevil treatment across England and Wales, using approved fumigants in line with DEFRA and international standards. We also offer advice on ongoing grain hygiene, monitoring, and preventative measures to keep your storage pest-free long after treatment.

If you’ve spotted signs of grain weevils such as exit holes in kernels, insect tracks in floury dust, or live beetles in the grain it is important to act quickly in order to protect your stored grain. Contact us today for professional advice and a tailored grain weevil treatment plan.

      Frequently Asked Questions

Grain fumigation prices vary depending on the volume of grain being treated, the level of infestation, and the length of fumigation required. For example, a small silo or bin treatment will cost less than a large bulk storage or multiple lorry loads. Severe infestations may also require longer treatment times, which can affect the cost. The good news is that fumigation is a cost-effective solution, often saving more than it costs by preventing rejection, contamination, and financial losses.

If you are storing grain for more than a short period, fumigation is strongly recommended. Even low levels of insects can multiply quickly and cause serious losses. Fumigation ensures your grain remains safe, market-ready, and compliant with UK food safety standards. It’s often more cost-effective to prevent infestations early than to deal with rejected or contaminated stock later.

Most of our grain fumigation treatments take around 7 days, but in cases of severe infestation, we may recommend up to 14 days. The exact duration also depends on some other factors such as temperature and storage conditions.

Fumigation is highly effective against all common stored product pests, including grain weevils, sawtooth grain beetles, flour beetles, mites, and other insects that damage stored grain.

Grain infestations can show themselves in several ways. You may notice live or dead insects present in the grain, or see flying and crawling insects on the product itself, on bags, or around pallets. Moths such as the Warehouse moth and Mill moth often leave behind fine webbing produced by their larvae. Other common signs include frass (insect droppings and debris), cast skins, and the remains of dead insects. Small exit holes in kernels are a clear indicator of emerging adult weevils. In more advanced infestations, the grain can develop damp patches, mould, or even begin germinating as heat builds up in “hot-spots” created by pest activity. In some cases, you may also see insect tracks through floury dust on or around the stored product. If you spot any of these symptoms, immediate fumigation is recommended to stop the problem spreading.

Grain weevils are one of the most destructive stored product pests because they burrow inside kernels, making them difficult to detect until the damage is done and its too late. The most effective treatment for grain weevils is fumigation with phosphine gas, which is able to penetrate deep into the grain and kill all life stages including adults, larvae, and eggs hidden inside the kernels. Unlike surface sprays or contact insecticides fumigation targets insects inside the grain itself ensuring a complete eradication. To prevent re-infestation, it’s also important to keep storage facilities clean, monitor regularly, and use proper grain hygiene practices which we are able to provide as part of a long term solution planning.
